We will collect you from your accommodation; we will then head south from Galway City towards the County of Clare. Our first stop will be in the quaint fishing village of Kinvara. We will visit Dunguaire Castle (circa 1520), as our first stop for photos.
Built-in 1520 by the O’Hynes clan Dunguaire Castle lies on the rocky, picturesque shores of Galway Bay. In the early 17th century the Castle passed to the Martyn family. Mayor of Galway Richard Martyn lived here till his death in 1642. In 1924 Dunguaire Castle was bought by Oliver St. John Gogarty, the famous literary figure and surgeon. This was the time of the great Celtic revival in Irish literature. The Castle became a venue for meetings of the literary revivalists such as W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Edward Martin, and J.M. Synge. In 1954 the Castle was purchased by Christobel Lady Amptill. Christobel Lady Amptill finished the restoration of the Castle which was started by Oliver St. John Gogarty. Upon Cristobel’s death, the Castle passed to the state, and it is now managed by Shannon Heritage who show the Castle as it would have been in the 16th century.
From Kinvara, we will head into The Burren and onwards to the Cliffs of Moher. On this route, we will stop at Poulnabroune Dolmen (Circa 3800 years BCE) and Kilfenora Cathedral (Cira 1100).
The exquisitely proportioned Poulnabroune Dolmen is a portal tomb which dates to around 3800 BCE. The tall portal stones stand at just under 6 ft in front and hold the immense weight of the capstone on top.
The remains of over 30 bodies were discovered beneath Poulnabrone Dolmen during the archaeological dig in the 1980s, some of which were children. This ancient site will give you an insight into the very beginning of civilisation in Ireland and the values of life and death in Ireland 6000 years ago.
After your breath-taking experience at UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Cliffs of Moher, we will head to Doolin Pier, where we will join a cruise to the bottom of the Cliffs of Moher, a once in a lifetime experience!
After your fantastic cruise, we stop for a spot of local food in the traditional rustic village of Doolin, in one of our favourite traditional Irish pubs. Your guide will give you the best options to suit your needs.
After a hearty meal and a pint or two! We will travel along the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal route in the world, one of the most famous coastal drives in Europe, stopping for photos along the way.
Connemara Tour
Average tour time is about 8-9 hours
We will collect you from your accommodation, and we will head northwest of Galway City into Connemara.
Our first stop will be at the hauntingly evocative Franciscan friary of Ross Errily, lying on the banks of the Black River, the natural border separates the ancient warring counties of Galway and Mayo. Ross Errily is one of the largest and most impressive surviving Franciscan friaries in Ireland.
We travel a short distance to our next stop in the Island village of Cong. Cong, home to Ashford Castle, the 13th century home of the founders of Galway City.
Ashford Castle, founded in 1228 by the De Burgo family, has today become one of the most exclusive hotels in the world. The Castle remained in the hands of the De Burgo family for 350 years before passing to Sir Richard Bingham in 1589; he defeated the De Burgos battle in 1852. The Ashford Estate was purchased by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness as the famous family extend their portfolio across Ireland. He added on two Victorian-style extensions and enlarged the grounds to 26,000 acres. On his death in 1868 the estate was passed to his son Lord Ardilaun. Lord Ardilaun was an avid gardener who developed the property even further and oversaw the massive development of the woodlands. The grounds remained with the Guinness family until 1939, and the estate was purchased by Mr Noel Huggard who transform this medieval site into a world-renown hotel. The hotel soon became known for the provision of country pursuits such as archery and hunting.
Cong is also the filming location of the 1951 John Ford film The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O Hara.
Then travel our way back into the heart of Connemara travelling beside Lough Na Fooey, one of Ireland’s hidden gems Lough Na Fooey is one of Connemara’s most photographed areas. The lough is a rectangular glacial lake and the site of the ancient “Finny Volcano” (490 million years old). Home to the mythological Kelpie. The Kelpie is a beautiful, powerful black horse that lives in the deep pools and rivers and the lake of Lough Na Fooey. The easiest way to spot a Kelpie is to watch the hooves, on the Kelpie they seem to be backwards!
Further up the road, we arrive in the village of Leenane, which sits at the mouth of the wild and remote Killary Fjord. Take in the panramic views of the hills rising steeply from the silvery sea. Frequent shifts in light and shadow show different colours on the peaks, valleys and heathery bogs.
Once we arrive at Kylemore Abbey, you can take in the astonishing views of the Victorian gardens and the abbey itself.
Kylemore Abbey was founded in 1867 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor and philanthropist from London who fell in love with Connemara during his honeymoon and built his dream. The Henry family were also involved in the textile industry in Manchester. Mitchell and his wife Margaret moved to Ireland after four years of construction. Mitchell served as an MP from 1871 to 1885 for the county of Galway implementing many improvements for Galway City and County. Kylemore is home to the largest and most diverse walled Victorian gardens in Ireland, an incredible achievement as it is also the most remote of places.
Clifden, the capital of Connemara, will be our next location. John Darcy founded this rare and planned town in an attempt to establish a city! It may be a small and remote town today, but it became world-famous on more than one occasion. Clifden was the site of the first transatlantic radio broadcast, Marconi, and the landing site for the first transatlantic flight, Alcock & Brown. It is in this inspirational place that we will enjoy a meal in one of the many famous traditional Irish pubs and restaurants.
When We have filled our bellies with food and a couple of pints, We will start the journey back to Galway City travelling through The Inagh valley and Maam Cross.
